COLOMBO (AFP) - The president of Sri Lanka said Wednesday there would be peace on the troubled island only after more fighting to crush separatist rebels as he unveiled the nation's biggest-ever war budget. "It is essential to completely wipe out terrorism," President Mahinda Rajapakse told parliament, estimating defence spending this year of 155 billion rupees (1.4 billion dollars) rising to 166.44 billion in 2008.

The ground operation, launched by the SLA with heavy artillery, Multi Barrel Rocket Fire and with the support of Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) helicopter gunships at 5:20 a.m. was thwarted around 7:30 a.m., after intense fighting, he said claiming that more than 100 SLA troops were wounded and at least 16 killed in the attack. A military source in Jaffna confirmed that 23 soldiers were killed and 150 wounded.

Nov. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Sri Lanka will slide into civil war unless countries such as the U.S. and neighboring India take over from Norway as peace mediators, said Rohan Gunaratna, head of a Singapore-based research center.

``Norway has outlived its usefulness as a mediator and facilitator,'' said Gunaratna of the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research. ``It requires more powerful countries such as the European Union or the U.S. or India to play a significant role in the conflict.''
